‧ SYNOPSIS ‧
Longfar Temple, located in Taiwan, has housed nearly a thousand mentally, and physically disabled, poor, and deserted people for more than half-century. The masters would lead the folks to join the chorus, do chores, and release the fish fry.
Somewhere outside the Temple, a housekeeper of a resort, Lilian, just had a crush on the chef of a seafood bar, A-yong. They are troubled by where to release the goldfish they got from the scooping vendor in the night market.
Somehow, the suffering of the folks and the fish led Lilian into an erotic fantasy world.
‧ STATEMENT ‧
Religious healing was prevalent in Europe in the Middle Ages but disappeared as psychiatry and human rights awareness rises. Surprisingly, the method exists in 21st-century Taiwan, which is known for its advanced medical technology.
Longfar Temple was located in southern Taiwan, and since the 1970s, it housed almost a thousand mentally and physically disabled, and its controversial management method of “Chain of Compassion” was once famous overseas. In 2017, there was an infectious disease outbreak at the temple, which caused the government to evict people into hospitals, many of them found it challenging to get used to their new environments, and Longfar Temple has remained deserted to this day.
Dawaimaha is a magical realist film and also is the first film in Taiwan based on the purge of Longfar Temple, it presents many historical photos that were unpublished before. The director combines the expression of mockumentary and representation, and breaks the barrier between the mentally disabled and the ordinary, he highlights the sexual rights of the weak through his consistent eroticism topic. It will reveal a mysterious woman's life through a religious tour, leading the audience through her lonely and romantic feelings step by step.
